Chapter Nineteen

Tamlen

I stood with my pride around me. My pride. I chuckled slightly, feeling pleased with my own contentment at having a new and unexpected connection, one that I hadn’t dreamed was possible nor ever thought to want. My existence had been long and mostly lonely, although I preferred my solitude. For the most part. Over the years, I had a few relationships with men, mostly brief ones. They satisfied an itch, and nothing more. My thoughts strayed to Gray Beloch for a moment, and then I deliberately shook it off. I wasn’t sure what was happening there, if anything, but now was not the time to explore it. When will be? My mind supplied, helpfully. I shook off the thought. Later.

Nox was speaking to Cori. “I think we need to get this over with. We need the Alliance on our side, or at least, not against us, in order to take on what’s coming with Turgenev,” he said.

“Agreed. Tamlen, are they expecting us at a certain time? How does this work? And what should we expect when we go?” Cori asked, looking at me, a small amount of anxiety on her face. Given what she’d been through, it didn’t seem too significant.

I nodded at her. “They are concerned about our connection, mostly because it is … unheard of. Most of my brethren fear me already. I am older than nearly all of the existing vampires. I am more powerful, for reasons you are now aware. And I steadfastly refuse to become a member of the ruling covens, or sire any new vampires. I have been asked repeatedly, but…” I broke off, trying to put my thoughts into words.

“This is not a life I would have chosen for myself and I will not choose it for anyone else. Plus, siring newbies is like being a parent,” I shuddered a bit. “Not for me, thanks.”

Memphis laughed. Cori just looked at me, eyebrows raised.

“They want to gauge our connection for themselves. To see how much power you have over me, since you are not a vampire and I am arguably the most powerful vampire. Maybe not politically, but certainly in other ways. They want to know if you are a threat, despite my assurances. I intend to continue my work when Turgenev has been neutralized, so I have to make nice and give them what they want. Honestly, I have no idea how they’ll respond when they see you. Plus, you’re an anomaly—a very powerful magic user, a shifter, with four shifter mates and a vampire pride-member. Basically, they’re twitchy about everything.”

Cori snorted. “I can’t say I blame them. I’m pretty twitchy myself these days. Lots of changes in a short period of time. Just months ago I was alone with no magic, a mostly cut-off cat and only Maxie and Auggie as company. It’s … a lot for sure,” she said.

Nox leaned over and pulled her into his arms, kissing her temple and breathing her scent in. “It is a lot, but you have us, mate.
